First of all I would like to wish you a happy 2021! Hopefully it will be better than 2020. A lot has happened last year besides COVID-19. We welcomed our second daughter, moved to a different house in a different…well.. not city but village! I found it hard adapting to my new life in combination with all the corona mess and job insecurity and was not really in the mood for blogging or even finishing the Iceland blog. Well a new year with a new years solution! More me-time and more blogs on the web.
My last blog was about Vik i Myrdal and the amazing DC-3 airplane! When we left Vik we continued our roadtrip to the glaciers. The road to these glaciers (which are just via the regular highway named route 1 ) are beautiful. Again we saw a lot of waterfalls, beautiful mountains, lava fields and a particular Icelandic landscape. What is really cool to do, as there isn’t a lot of traffic, to stop the car at a beautiful spot and take some pictures while walking on the highway. Of course I forced the boyfriend to risk his life for my instagram photo.
First stop: Jokulsarlon!
This is a impressive place to visit! Jokulsarlon is the biggest glacial river lagoon in Iceland, located in the southern part of Vatnajokull N.P. and easy to reach via the main road route 1. While standing besides the water you’ll find some massive icebergs, seals swimming around and of course the glacier itself. We chose to walk around, read some of the information signs and take some pictures. If you are more interested in a boat tour, it is possible to do so.
Next: Diamond beach (Breidamerkursandur)!
If you are driving 2 minutes further from Jokulsarlon you find the parking spot for Diamond beach. Diamond beach is a beach with of course a lot of black sand but also a lot of huge but also small icebergs. Imagine this black sand and sparkling icebergs, it is a huge contrast right? So probably you now know why it’s a nice spot to bring your camera with you and take lots of pictures!
Last stop for the day: Fjallsarlon:
After we had lunch at I don’t know at which place anymore, we drove 5 minutes back via Route 1 direction Skaftafell, to the last stop of the day, Fjallsarlon. This is also a glacier lake close to a volcano and is a little bit more hidden and a little bit less touristic than the Jokulsarlon glacier lake. So I reccommend to visit both lakes as it is so close to each other. Jokulsarlon is bigger and what Iike about Fjallsarlon is that it has a bit of a small beach in front. Also a great spot to take some pictures and for kids to be naughty and try to eat sand and ice.
After Fjallsarlon we headed to the Foss hotel in Nupar (booked for 2 nights), located in the middle of the lava fields. After checking in and arranging the baby bed, we stayed inside. After a full day of driving and sightseeing (in the cold) its more convenient with a baby to have dinner inside or close by the hotel.
The next morning we drove to Fjadrargljufur Canyon.
Also this spot is easy to reach via the Route 1 road. This is also…..well everything is beautiful in Iceland …….but also a BEAUTIFUL canyon, including a river which flows through the canyon and a small waterfall. You’ll find an easy walking path besides the canyon with some viewing points where you are able to take some better pictures from the canyon. The canyon is a very touristic spot thanks to the video clip of Justin Bieber – I’ll show you – and it became so popular that the site was closed for several weeks due to the environmental damage caused by the huge amount of tourists. Lucky for me the canyon was accessible and I saw 2 maybe 3 other tourists. Maybe because I planned my visit in the morning so you are not bothered by daytrip tourists from Reykjavik? Who knows! If you are traveling with a baby I again reccommend a carrier instead of a pram. The path is easy for walking but not for a stroller.
Next stop and the last stop for the day: Skaftafell National Park including the Svartifoss waterfall.
The whole reason Iceland was on top of my bucketlist was because of ‘I think a cookie saved on my computer’. Everytime I opened up Facebook there was this picture of the Svartifoss waterfall including an Iceland advertisement. And for real, this is the most pretty waterfall I’ve ever seen because of the crazy black rock formations behind it. When you park your car at the parking lot you have to walk 3,5 – 4 km. and sometimes uphill to reach the waterfall. The last part of the hike was a bit challenging with a babycarrier and a baby of 10-12 kilos in it while being pregnant and scared to fall down. But it’s possible with a baby carrier and without the carrier the hike is much easier. And it’s all worth it. The Skaftafell national park is also known for more hikes including a guided gletcher hike (book in advance via Google Search, I did not do it because of my all time favourite excuse ‘the baby’). Hoi iedereen,
Allereerst een heel fijn 2021 gewenst! Ik hoop dat dit jaar echt een stuk beter en leuker wordt dan 2020. Vorig jaar is er in mijn priveleven veel gebeurd. We hebben onze tweede dochter mogen verwelkomen, zijn verhuist naar een dorp. Eerlijk gezegd moest ik daar enorm aan wennen. Daarbij speelde er natuurlijk de hele corona crisis op de voorgrond en de bijbehorende baanonzekerheid die daarbij komt kijken. De regering maakt het de luchtvaart niet altijd 1,2,3 gemakkelijk. Ik was door dit alles totaal niet in de stemming om achter de computer te kruipen en de IJsland blogs af te maken. Maargoed, een nieuw jaar met nieuwe voornemens! Meer bloggen en meer tijd voor mijzelf! Hopen dat het lukt!
Mijn laatste blog was over Vik i Myrdal en het DC-3 vliegtuig. Vanuit dit plaatsje zijn wij verder gereden naar een gebied waar je veel gletsjers en gletsjermeren hebt. De route hiernaartoe is al fantastisch en dat voor de snelweg, Route 1. Weer zagen we veel bergen, watervallen, lava velden en het typische IJslandse landschap. Wat leuk is om te doen (aangezien er weinig verkeer is) om de auto langs de kant van de weg te zetten op een mooi punt en een foto te maken dat je midden over de grote weg loopt. Uiteraard heb ik mijn vriend gedwongen om zijn leven half te riskeren voor mijn instagram foto.
Eerste stop: Jokulsarlon!
Dit is een hele toffe stop en attractie! Jokulsarlon is het grootste gletsjermeer van IJsland, gelegen in het zuiden van het Vatnajokull N.P. en gelegen naast de hoofdweg Route 1. Als je langs het water staat heb je uitzicht op veel grote ijsschotsen die in het water drijven, de gletsjer zelf in de verte en je ziet her en der af en toe een zeehond zwemmen. Wij kozen ervoor om wat foto’s te maken en de informatieborden te lezen. Als je geïnteresseerd bent in een boottour, kan je dit hier ook doen.
Vervolgens: Diamond beach (Breidamerkursandur)!
Dit plekje is twee minuten rijden vanaf Jokulsarlon en ligt er eigenlijk praktisch naast. Diamond Beach is een strand met uiteraard zwart zand en een hele boel kleine maar ook grote aangespoelde ijsbergen en schotsen. Stel je eens voor….zwart zand en witte bijna schitterende ijsrotsen. Dit geeft een heel mooi contrast vooral als je gek bent op fotograferen.
Laatste stop van de dag: Fjallsarlon:
Nadat we ergens hadden geluncht en ik heb geen idee meer waar, reden we 5 minuten terug richting Skaftafell via Route 1 naar Fjallsarlon. Fjallsarlon is ook een gletsjermeer dicht bij een vulkaan en misschien net iets meer verborgen en minder populair dan Jokulsarlon. Ik raad aan beide gletsjermeren te bezoeken, het ligt praktisch naast elkaar. Bij Fjallsarlon heb je een net iets groter strandje voor het meer en sta je wat fijner als je veel foto’s wilt maken en je kind graag stiekem zand en ijspegels in haar mond wilt stoppen als je even niet kijkt.
Vervolgens reden we terug naar ons hotel (Foss Hotel in Nupar) welke wij voor twee nachten hadden geboekt. Nadat wij waren ingecheckt en een babybed voor op de kamer hadden geregeld, hebben we in het hotel gegeten. Met een baby of klein kind is het soms fijner, na een dag op pad te zijn geweest in de kou zonder middagslaapje, om gewoon in of naast het hotel te eten.
De volgende morgen waren we al vroeg op pad naar de Fjadrargljufur Canyon.
Wederom is ook dit plekje makkelijk bereikbaar via Route 1! Ik val een beetje in herhaling door te zeggen dat ook dit wederom HEEL ERG MOOI is. Wat je hier doet is gewoon een makkelijk voetpad volgen die langs de canyon loopt met uitzicht op de canyon en de rivier die ertussen stroomt plus een kleine waterval. Her en der hebben ze plateaus geplaatst waar je nog beter het uitzicht kunt bewonderen of foto’s kunt maken. Deze canyon is erg populair bij toeristen dankzij een video clip die Justin Bieber heeft opgenomen (zoek maar op: Justin Bieber – I’ll Show You). Omdat deze plek zo massaal werd overstroomt door toeristen en daar de bijbehorende schade werd aangericht, is de canyon in het verleden weken gesloten geweest. Gelukkig heb ik er maar twee misschien drie andere toeristen gezien en was het er ‘s ochtends vroeg dus super rustig. Misschien omdat ik er vroeg was, dat je geen last hebt van dagtripjes toeristen uit Reykjavik? Wie zal het zeggen! Wederom raad ik aan om als je met een baby reist om dan een draagzak mee te nemen en niet de kinderwagen.
Skaftafell N.P. en de Svartifoss Waterval.
De hele reden waarom ik zo graag naar IJsland wou, was door ‘ik denk’ een cookie die mijn computer heeft opgeslagen zodat ik toentertijd op Facebook helemaal doodgegooid werd met een foto van de Svartifoss waterval en een bijbehorende IJsland promo. Serieus, dit is een van de mooiste watervallen die ik ooit heb gezien puur door die gekke zwarte rotsformaties eromheen. Na het parkeren van de auto moet je wel een hele hike van 3,5-4 kilometer ondernemen naar de waterval. Het laatste stukje van deze hike was voor mij een enorme uitdaging doordat ik een draagzak met een baby van 10-12 kilo om had en zelf zwanger was, dus absoluut niet mocht vallen. Maar zonder draagzak is het al een stuk gemakkelijker om deze waterval te bereiken. Skaftafell National Park is sowieso een fantastische plek als je gek bent op hiken. Je kunt tig hikes doen welke je kunt vinden op deze website. Tevens kan je hier een hike met gids doen bij een gletsjer welke ik niet heb gedaan door of dankzij mijn favoriete excuus en dat is dat ik met een baby reis. Mocht je de gletsjer hike willen doen moet je het even googelen. De foto’s die je van de hike kunt vinden zien er wel super uit op instagram!
Ik hoop dat je deze eerste blogpost van 2021 (en hopelijk niet de laatste) leuk vond om te lezen en ik je misschien wel heb geïnspireerd om naar IJsland te gaan – als we weer mogen natuurlijk!
