It seems we’re finally beginning to see some light at the end of the corona tunnle. A lot of countries are turning into code yellow! Time to make plans! (Scroll down for the Dutch version – all pictures are mine mine mine!)
First I was’nt really motivated to finish the Iceland blog as it has no purpose. Why writing a travel blog if the travel industry is completely washed away because of the corona virus. So it took a while….Maybe some of you are dreaming to go to Iceland. So here is the final Iceland blog!
After visiting Jokursarlon we reserved one full day to drive all the way back via Reykjavik to the peninsula named Snæfellsnes. This took us about 4-5 hours. On the road we made a quick stop at Seljalandsfoss (see the previous blog Iceland part 2) to buy a stuffed puffin for our daughter and we had a lunch break at a museum cafe in Borgarnes.
After spending one day in the car we arrived at the Fosshotel Hellnar which is located along the coast. The hotel has a beachy atmosphere and as there are not so much restaurants around, I reccomend to have dinner at the hotel restaurant (which has a great sea view by the way).
We stayed at Snæfellsnes for 3 nights so we had 1 full day to go sightseeing and one day to do a whale tour on a boat with a company called Laki Tours. Unfortunately the weather was quite unpredictable at the day we booked the whale tour, so we had to reschedule to another day. In fact the day we planned to drive back to Reykjavik. So we chose to do the whale tour in the morning and drive to Reykjavik immediately after the tour was finished.
Here are my favourite things to see at Snæfellsnes:
Kirkjufell
The most famous place at Snæfellsnes and maybe the most famous place in Iceland since Game of Thrones was filmed here. I never watched game of thrones but I bump around their filming locations all the time. And nope, I won’t watch it. If you type in #iceland at instagram I bet you spot hundrends maybe thousands of photos of Kirkjufell. It’s a beautiful location and definitely worth a visit.
Ytri Tunga beach
This beach is famous for its seals. A lot of common and grey seals live here. And of course if you are traveling with a small kid notice you have to walk on a path (well it’s not a path) of wiggly stones. So be very careful and keep your balance. But it is so much fun to see these seals laying around.
Djúpalónssandur dritvik
This is one of the most mysterious beaches I’ve ever seen. Maybe because you find some parts of a shipwreck on this beach. Besides that, the beach is windy, dramatic, really pretty but also really spooky. I find this place maybe the most beautiful one at Snæfellsnes Island. Maybe because I did not expect much of it as you visit a lot of beaches in Iceland. But I really liked this one.
Whale Tour – Laki Tours
One of my biggest dreams is to see Orca’s in real life. In Panama I did a lot of whale tours, where I saw lots of whales. (We even jumped into the water to swim with the big whales – maybe a little bit reckless but also a experience which I will never forget). In Iceland there are a lot of Orcas and Whales, so to book a tour is a must! Unfortunately we only saw a group of dolphins. You cannot order the wildlife in advance on any safari, but hey thats nature! When you arrive at Laki tours, be on time. You have to put on a special suit. Because I carried Phileine in the baby carrier I got a really big suit and tucked Phileine in the baby carrier in my suit. She slept during the whole whale safari which takes about 3 hours. So a whale tour with a baby is no problem at all!
Arnastapi
During the one and only day we experienced very bad weather in Iceland we visited Arnastapi as it is next to the parking lot and we could jumped in and out the car easily. Over here you find besides a harbour and a lot of rock formations a crazy rock bridge! A very popular photo spot!
Búðakirkja
If you read about Iceland or search for Iceland on instagram, probably you find some photos and information of Búðakirkja. Better known as a wooden black church in the middle of nowhere in Iceland. You’ll find this church at Snæfellsnes and this location is very loved among photographers all over the world. I must say, the contrast of the church compared to the landscape is very beautiful!
Stykkishólmur
The biggest town at Snæfellsnes is this small fishing place. If you saw the movie ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ you may recognize the environment as some parts of the movie are shot here. If you love to eat some fish or like to enjoy the typical Icelandic coast-village atmosphere you should definitely go here!
This are my favourite places at Snæfellsnes! Of course there are many more places and must visits at this Peninsula, but if you have limited time you are good to go with this list!

Hoi iedereen,
Eindelijk komt er wat licht aan het einde van de corona tunnel. Steeds meer landen komen op code geel te staan en we kunnen voorzichtig wat reisplannen gaan maken. Ik was totaal mijn motivatie kwijt. Waarom gaan reisbloggen als je niet kunt reizen? Maar misschien droom je wel van een reis naar IJsland dus hier is het laatste gedeelte van de IJsland blog!
Na onze stop in Jokursarlon hebben we een hele dag uitgetrokken om langs de kust en voorbij Reykjavik terug te rijden naar een schiereiland genaamd Snæfellsnes. Deze rit duurde ongeveer 4 tot 5 uur. Tijdens het rijden maakten wij twee tussenstops, namelijk in Seljalandsfoss (zie IJsland deel 2) omdat ik daar een Puffin knuffel moest kopen voor mijn dochter en in het museum cafe in Borgarnes voor lunch.
Na toch wel een dag in de auto te hebben gezeten arriveerden wij in het Fosshotel Hellnar welke ligt aan zee. Het hotel heeft echt een strand / Cape Cod sfeer en aangezien er niet veel restaurants in de buurt te vinden zijn kan ik het hotelrestaurant zeer aanraden. Het restaurant heeft een prachtig uitzicht over het water.
Wij hebben drie nachten op dit schiereiland geslapen. Dit hadden wij zo gepland zodat we een volle dag over het eiland konden rijden met de auto om alle bekende plekjes af te struinen. Voor de andere volledige dag hadden wij de walvissentour geboekt. Helaas, zoals het weer in IJsland wel vaker is, was het weer nier goed genoeg voor de tour en moesten wij deze verplaatsen naar de dag dat wij weer naar Reykjavik zouden vertrekken. Safety first!
Dit is mijn lijstje van de mooiste dingen om te zien of te doen op Snæfellsnes:
Kirkjufell
Dit is de bekendste plek van Snæfellsnes, misschien wel van heel IJsland sinds een gedeelte van Games of Thrones hier is opgenomen. Ik heb Game of Thrones nog nooit gezien maar ik kom wel op vakantie steeds op plekken waar een scene is opgenomen. Nog steeds wil ik de serie niet zien, sorry voor de Game of Thrones fans. Als je #Iceland intypt op instagram, kom je honderden foto’s tegen van Kirkjufell. En het is ook heel erg mooi! Je mag het schiereiland niet verlaten als je hier niet bent geweest!
Ytri Tunga beach
Dit strand staat bekend door de vele zeehonden die hier zijn gevestigd. Hier leven twee soorten, namelijk de gewone ordinaire zeehond en de grijze zeehond. Uiteraard is het met een baby een uitdaging om hier te komen. Je moet eerst over honderden wiebelige stenen hiken, voetje voor voetje, met een draagzak om voordat je de zeehonden bereikt. Toch was de deels gevaarlijke wandelroute het wel waard!
Djúpalónssandur dritvik
Dit is een van de meest mysterieuze stranden die ik ooit heb gezien. Misschien omdat het hier ruig is, er een spooksfeer hangt, het verlaten is, het er hard waait en er delen van scheepswrakken liggen. Ik vond dit (onverwacht) een van de mooiste plekken van het schiereiland!
Whale Tours – Laki Tours
Een van mijn grootste dromen is om Orca’s in het echt te zien. In Panama heb ik wel heel veel walvissentours gedaan en er zelfs mee gezwommen wat misschien een beetje roekeloos is, maar het is ook een ervaring om nooit te vergeten. In IJsland heb je een enorme populatie Orca’s en walvissen dus een tour doen is een must! Helaas hebben wij behalve een groep dolfijnen 0,0 gespot. Je kan voor een safari nou eenmaal geen wild per-orderen maar dat is de natuur! Als je bij het startpunt (een container) van Laki Tours arriveert, zorg dat je op tijd bent! Je wordt daar eerst in een soort van pak gehesen Omdat ik Phileine bij mij droeg (en Livia in mijn buik – dus ik was eigenlijk dubbel bemand) in de draagzak kreeg ik een extra groot pak aan waar zij in paste met de rits eroverheen. Phileine heeft de hele tour van drie uur geslapen in de draagzak, dus ik kan veronderstellen dat het meenemen van een baby geen probleem is!
Arnastapi
Gedurende een dag tijdens de hele IJsland vakantie hadden wij slecht weer. Op deze dag hebben we onder andere Arnastapi bezocht, aangezien het naast een parkeerplaats ligt en je makkelijk even erin en eruit kunt hoppen. In Arnastapi vind je behalve een haven en rotsformaties de bekende rots brug. Een populaire locatie om te fotograferen!
Búðakirkja
Als je informatie opzoekt over IJsland of IJsland opzoekt op instagram, kom je hoogstwaarschijnlijk wat foto’s tegen van Búðakirkja. Beter bekend als een houten zwarten kerk ergens in the middle of nowhere. De kleur van de kerk vormt een schel contrast met het ruige landschap van IJsland. Dit kerkje vind je dus op Snæfellsnes en is erg populair bij fotografen, en terecht! Je kunt hier prachtige foto’s maken!
Stykkishólmur
Het grootste stadje van Snæfellsnes is dit kleine vissersplaatsje. Misschien herken je het hier wel als je je bedenkt dat delen van de film ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ hier zijn opgenomen. Als je het leuk vindt om een visje te eten of wat sfeer te proeven van een typisch IJslands vissersdorpje moet je hier zeker naartoe gaan!
Dit vond ik zelf de mooiste plekjes van Snæfellsnes! Natuurlijk zijn er nog veel meer dingen te zien hier, maar dit vond ik persoonlijk erbovenuit steken. Handig als je niet genoeg tijd hebt om het hele schiereiland te ontdekken!
